Due to new draft restrictions put in place by the Panama Canal Authority many carriers are cutting back the amount of cargo they will load on their vessels. If a carrier exceeds the maximum draft they will be stranded at the entrance to the canal until either they can unload some containers or the water levels increase. Some carriers have immediately begun placing restrictions on accepting “heavy” containers – even placing a maximum of 7-8 tons per TEU. The Journal of Commerce has reported that some carriers are cutting loads on vessels to Asia by 10% to avoid being stranded.
