GSP will expire at the end of this year unless Congress takes action immediately. Most likely they will not take action and importers will be stuck paying duty until GSP is reinstated. For now we can only wait and hope they do not take too long. It does not make sense for them to collect all these duties to only refund them in the future – but I guess that is government. As of today CBP is working on the programming to be able to automate the duty refund process IF it is reinstated retroactively. You might have noticed that I said “IF GSP is renewed”. That is because our government is not obligated to renew the program and certainly not required to renew it retroactively. In the past they have always chosen to renew retroactively however with the state of today’s government we can not take anything for granted. Just make sure you keep using the Special Program Indicators (A, A+, A*) and hope for the best.
